Recently, I was awakened in the middle of the night by what sounded like pebbles being thrown at my bedroom window. When I looked outside, I saw that it wasn’t rocks. It was hail. And along with it, enough rain to fill the street, my back yard, and more. As the skies continued to pour, and the ground water continued to rise inch by inch, I looked at the radar map on my phone. “Uh oh,” I thought. “We’re going to flood.”
Flooding can bring with it widespread disaster. Homes can be swept away. Lives can be lost. It is messy and dirty and can take a long time to recover from. But in some cases, it can be a chance to start over.
Just as God used the great flood described in Genesis to start over with humankind, so God floods our lives with His grace through Jesus Christ, so that we can begin anew every day. And unlike street flooding, which can leave behind a trail of mud and grime, God’s flood of living water washes us completely clean! The disasters of our past, of our own making, are swept away and our lives are changed forever. Lord, thank you for flooding my life with your grace and for making me a new creation in you.
