Perri Dermatology

A Texas-raised and Texas-trained dermatologist. A team that is like a family. Patients who can get timely appointments and compassionate care. It’s what Perri Dermatology does best.

Texas raised and Texas trained

Dr. Anthony Perri grew up in Corsicana, Texas, where his father was a general urologist. The younger Perri followed in his father’s proverbial footsteps and became a physician himself; however, when it came time to choose his own medical specialty, he found his father’s own surprising and sobering diagnosis had influenced him the most. During a routine skin screening, the elder Dr. Perri learned that he had developed a melanoma—an aggressive, deadly skin cancer. Fortunately, early detection allowed him to make a complete recovery.

After graduating from Baylor College of Medicine with honors, the younger Dr. Perri completed his dermatology residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch and became a board-certified dermatologist. As he often tells people, he is Texas raised and Texas trained. When he was ready to set up his own practice, he remembered how much he liked growing up in a smaller Texas city, so he joined a large, multi-specialty practice in Conroe. In 2012, the practice closed, endangering thousands of patients who were without access to their physicians.

Dr. Perri soon formed Perri Dermatology so his patients were not left in the gap. “I am proud that my patients did not experience any disruption in their treatment or care for their dermatological needs,” he says. “My practice provided peace of mind, stability, and security on top of dermatological care during very difficult months.”

His commitment to his patients did not stop there. It can take months to get appointments with some dermatologists; however, Dr. Perri is committed to providing patients with easily accessible care. He notes it can be stressful for patients to have to worry about worsening skin conditions while waiting to see a dermatologist; furthermore, timely appointments can help detect skin cancer and other conditions when they are most treatable. “Fast access is one of the pillars built into my practice’s standard day-to-day business operations,” Dr. Perri says. “At Perri Dermatology, we know life is busy. We proactively work every day to make sure your interaction with us is efficient, so you are discouraged from postponing your medical care,” he adds. Not only are his patients able to get appointments without long waits, but they can expect to see Dr. Perri personally when they come to the office. In addition, they can readily speak with trained staff and will have their insurance claims processed quickly.

The Perri Dermatology family

Dr. Perri is backed by a loyal staff that seems almost like a family. Many members of the Perri Dermatology team have been with the practice since it opened in 2012, and several members worked with Dr. Perri even before he founded his solo practice. Alba Galvez, office manager, estimates that two-thirds of the staff have been working for Perri Dermatology for five years or longer. “We are a family,” she says. “We work together for a common purpose: helping our patients. We make a difference.”

“It’s kind of like a little family unit here,” agrees Melissa Crawford, who has worked at the practice for 12 years, serving as medical assistant, clinical supervisor, and OSHA compliance officer. Like many of the staff members at Perri Dermatology, she is interested in medical issues and enjoys helping people. Crawford and other staff members have high praise for Dr. Perri and enjoy being a part of the Perri Dermatology team. “Dr. Perri treats the staff with respect,” she says.

Tiffany Rushing, whose primary job as a certified medical billing and coding specialist is to help patients with insurance claims, concurs. “Dr. Perri is a really good person to work for,” she says. “He is a loyal employer.” Rushing, who began working with Dr. Perri before he founded Perri Dermatology, has continued to work for the practice even after moving many miles from the office. She enjoys educating patients about their insurance concerns and works hard to ensure their claims are processed correctly. She is proud to be a part of the Perri Dermatology family. “We genuinely care about our patients,” she says. “I try to make sure their experience with us is a good one.”

Melissa Johnson, like Rushing, is a certified medical billing and coding specialist and began working for Dr. Perri before the formation of Perri Dermatology. “I am very proud to have been a part of this dedicated team of professionals for many years,” she says. She enjoys helping patients, especially those who are confused by the complexities they encounter when they switch to Medicare. “We love our Medicare patients,” Galvez says, noting that Johnson listens carefully to patients’ concerns. “I will take the time to explain it to them,” Johnson says. “Once they get the hang of it, they can feel more confident in their understanding of their insurance.”

Staff members also work with patients to make sure they understand skin diagnoses and treatment. Maria Rojero, a clinical supervisor who joined Perri Dermatology in 2013, particularly enjoys helping patients in this way. She answers their questions and makes sure they know what to do in the days ahead, striving to treat patients the way she’d like to be treated herself. “I make them feel comfortable and make sure they get the appropriate information they need before they leave the office,” she says. “I’m proud of being able to work with Dr. Perri and to be able to educate patients about different dermatology diagnoses.”

By greeting patients with a friendly smile, treating them with respect, and taking the time to answer their questions, the Perri Dermatology team works together to make sure patients have a positive experience when they visit the office. Team members share a desire to help others and are proud to be able to give assistance to Dr. Perri’s patients. And, behind the staff is a dermatologist who is known for his skill and compassion.  Perhaps that is why so many people have been Dr. Perri’s patients since he first founded his practice. “I am honored to be their dermatologist,” he says. “I appreciate and value each patient’s trust.”

Texas Generator Solutions

Texans still talk about the catastrophic winter storm of February 2021—especially in one local neighborhood. Roads were impassable, so residents were virtually trapped, and families tried to keep warm by wrapping up in blankets and camping out by their fireplaces. Fortunately, Jerry and Dustin Sorensen had recently installed a Generac generator in one of the homes in the neighborhood. When the power failed, the generator, fueled by the home’s natural gas supply, came to life. The gracious homeowner invited his neighbors to his house, where they drank coffee and were able to get warm. Jerry dubbed the home “FEMA Camp Two.” Over the next few months, many other people in the neighborhood saw the wisdom in purchasing generators to provide stand-by electricity.

In past years, residents of southeastern Texas worried about the occasional hurricane or tornado that might leave them without power for a few days. Today, there is more to fear. “Now that the grid has been exposed in the Houston area, people are concerned about keeping the heaters on in their homes,” Jerry says. During the 2021 winter storm, all 254 Texas counties were placed under winter storm and hard freeze warnings; day after day, temperatures stubbornly refused to rise above freezing. It was the coldest weather Texans had experienced in decades, and when the power grid failed, the storm became more than an inconvenience. Tragically, some Texans lost their lives to the storm, both directly and indirectly.

Furthermore, more people work from home than ever before, and most rely on electricity to telecommute. In addition, some people use lifesaving medical equipment that requires electricity. For many such people, owning a generator has become a priority.

Finding a niche

Jerry and his son Dustin always dreamed of owning their own business. At first, they weren’t sure what kind of business they wanted to operate, but during the past ten years, the father-son team worked for companies in the Houston area that supplied several brands of stand-by generators to local customers. During that time, they were most impressed with Generac, a company that makes generators in many sizes, even ones for large homes. Customers, likewise, seemed to prefer Generac: Jerry and Dustin observed that about 90 percent of their clientele chose Generac over other brands.

About six months after the crippling winter storm of 2021, the time seemed right, so Jerry and Dustin decided to pool their resources and carve a niche for themselves by supplying Generac generators to area residents. In March 2022, Texas Generator Solutions, an authorized Generac dealer, opened for business, providing turnkey installation, service and sales in multiple area counties. “We are the solution to backup power,” Dustin says.

Texas Generator Solutions is truly a family-owned and family-operated business. While Dustin takes care of operations, Jerry handles sales. Dustin’s sister Krystal Baker is the company’s office manager. From the start, the family’s goal was to provide friendly, hometown service. “We know every one of our customers,” Krystal says. “They don’t become a ticket in this office. If you mention a name, most people in this office will know who you are talking about. I think customers enjoy the fact that they can call our office, and we know what they’re talking about.”

When Jerry arrives at a home to supply a free, no-obligation quote, he never uses high-pressure sales techniques. Instead, he simply sizes up the house, finds the best location for a generator, conducts a load calculation, and talks to homeowners to see what size generator will fit their needs. While larger homes require more powerful units, some customers elect to use generators for only a fraction of their homes’ electrical appliances, such as air conditioners and heaters, refrigerators, freezers, and television sets. “We can customize the system,” Dustin says. “You can use everything you want, but not everything at the same time.” Even people who live in all-electric homes can take advantage of gas-powered, stand-by power. Texas Generator Solutions has relationships with local companies that can supply homes with propane; some even lease propane tanks.

Rapid and Reliable Service

Customers appreciate the prompt attention they receive from Texas Generator Solutions. Because the company keeps many units in stock, it can provide quick service. While some companies might take months to install a generator, Texas Generator Solutions can usually finish jobs in a few weeks. “You don’t have to wait forever for your generator—not two to four months, but three to four weeks,” Dustin says. In one local neighborhood, he says, two families contracted with companies to install generators. While one family worked with Texas Generator Solutions, the other family chose another company. Even though Texas Generator Solutions’ customer placed their order later, their generator was installed first. Their neighbors, who had already been waiting for two months, canceled their existing order and chose to do business with Texas Generator Solutions instead.

Jerry and Dustin want Texas Generator Solutions to be known for its premier service. “We try to make sure we do everything the right way,” Dustin says, “and one of our goals is to communicate every step of the way.” It must be working, because Jerry and Dustin report that they get many referrals from satisfied customers. Some say they appreciate the company’s attractive pricing (a result of low overhead), as well as its many financing options. Zero percent interest is available for 18-month loans, and with other available loans, customers can finance for up to 11 years.

Some people might worry about investing in a generator if they think they might later move to another house; however, Dustin says, relocating families have options. If they move to another house in the area, they can simply take the generator with them, and Texas Generator Solutions can facilitate the process. Even if families are relocating to another city or state, they can have Texas Generator Solutions uninstall their unit. When they arrive at their new home, they can have the generator reinstalled there.

Another option is for homeowners to leave their generator in place to make their home more attractive to prospective homebuyers. Jerry and Dustin predict that homeowners can recoup about 75 percent of the cost of their generators in the form of higher sales prices.

Ultimately, Dustin says, a stand-by generator is simply a form of insurance, protecting homeowners from possible power outages in the future, whether caused by a natural disaster or a failed power grid. “You will be one step ahead of that power outage,” he says, and encourages customers not to procrastinate. “There’s no such thing as being too early. You don’t want to wait until it’s too late. There’s no price you can put on a generator during a catastrophe.”

“Putting Family in Family Medicine”

A trip to the doctor and pharmacy can be an impossibility for people who have no medical insurance and cannot pay out-of-pocket for the visit, medical tests, and prescriptions.  Many Montgomery County residents do not have necessary transportation to get themselves or family members to the facility.  These are the residents Lone Star Family Health Center (LSFHC) most wants to help.

LSFHC offers a variety of services–from the traditional annual checkup to counseling services for youth and adults. “We offer full service, comprehensive services, and other programs not offered anywhere else in the area,” says Courtney Galle, Marketing and Communications Manager for Lone Star.  “We also are open until 9:00 p.m. on weekdays and 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays at our Conroe location to accommodate patients’ work schedules.” Patients do not have to be a resident of Montgomery county to receive services in Conroe.

“Our mission is to provide compassionate, affordable healthcare for those who are underserved, uninsured, and underprivileged,” said Karen Harwell, Chief Executive Officer of Lone Star Family Health Center (LSFHC).  “‘Compassionate healthcare’” means more than an office visit or a treatment to our doctors and staff. That’s why you will find LSFHC staff involved through community outreach with health partnerships, health-related committees, health fairs, back-to-school programs, and more. ‘Affordable’ means that we care for everyone, regardless of the ability to pay. We care for those who are fully insured and, as a Federally Qualified Health Center, we also care for Medicaid and Medicare patients, the uninsured and underinsured.”

From the newborn to the elderly, LSFHC provides services for all ages. “Our emphasis is becoming a patient’s health home,” stated Harwell. “Primary care is extremely important for long-term health outcomes; having a healthy home that can make sure you stay on track with preventative health measures from adolescence through adulthood and into your golden years is key to staying healthy and avoiding costly medical bills later in life. Good overall health is difficult to maintain with occasional trips to urgent care or the emergency room.”

At Lone Star in Conroe, 104 physicians, many of whom speak two or more languages, cover 16 specialty areas of medicine:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Family Medicine
  • General Dentistry
  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Hospice & Palliative Medicine
  • Hospital Medicine
  • Internal Medicine
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology
  • Other Specialty
  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Pediatrics
  • Pedodontics
  • Psychiatry
  • Public Health & General Preventive Medicine
  • Sports Medicine
  • Sliding Fee Discount Program

While LSFHC does take commercial insurance and all patients, their target population are those who do not have insurance, are underinsured, or just may not be able to afford a conventional doctor’s office visit.  Eligibility for the Sliding Fee Discount Program is determined by a patient’s household size and annual income. An application must be completed and proof of income is required. Discounts are applied based on federal poverty income guidelines, updated annually by the federal government. While fees for eligible patients are reduced, a nominal fee for services will be the patient’s responsibility. Payment is expected at the time of service.

Along with the sliding fee program, LSFHC also accepts many insurance plans that have a smaller network, including Medicaid and Marketplace plans.  This helps retired patients who no longer have insurance or very limited insurance and apply for the sliding scale program.

Call to schedule an appointment with an eligibility specialist or reach a member of the eligibility team via e-mail for questions about programs and eligibility.  “It’s a tremendous difference when you pay $25 for a regular doctor’s visit versus $150, and you won’t get a big bill in the mail after you leave,” said one patient.

Funding

Lone Star Family Health Center (LSFHC) is a nonprofit 501(c)3, full-service state-of-the-art family medicine provider operating facilities in Conroe, Spring, Willis, Grangerland, and Huntsville.

LSFHC is a community non-profit, led by a volunteer board of directors, 51 percent of whom must be clients of the health center.  Lone Star Family Health Center receives HHS funding and has Federal Public Health Service deemed status with respect to certain health or health-related claims, including medical malpractice claims, for itself and its covered individuals.

In-house Pharmacy

The in-house pharmacy is convenient, because this allows patients to fill prescriptions on site instead of going to another location after they leave the doctor.  The pharmacy is manned with technicians to fill prescriptions, but patients may also teleconference with a pharmacist in Conroe virtually through an iPad. This is a highlight in itself, because clinics usually don’t have that on site. The pharmacy is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Valerie Powell, pharmacist director for LSFCH, is assisted by Kirby, a robot that fills the prescription, counts the pills, prints the label, and presents the medication for the pharmacist to verify before the lid is put on the bottle. “Kirby does about 50 percent of our work now,” Valerie said.

Diabetic Care

Diabetes is one of the frequent diagnoses they see. To help those patients, glucose checks can be done at LSFHC, along with regular checkups to make sure medication is working properly and blood sugar levels are on track.

Diabetic patients are also able to apply for discounted insulin prescriptions. Without insurance, the cost of insulin can be hundreds of dollars, and people in poverty just cannot afford insulin at full cost. Diabetic and nutrition classes are also offered in Conroe, but Walker County residents can log into Zoom and join the classes to educate patients and help them learn how to live with diabetes.

Women’s Health

LSFHC offers a variety of services for women’s health, including basic well woman exams. First, free breast cancer screenings and exams are offered. Once the screening is done, mammogram orders are given which can be filled at the patient’s desired location or through The Rose, a 3D mobile mammography service, which travels to the clinic and provides free mammograms.  Gynecology services are also offered, such as cervical cancer screenings, pap smears, and pregnancy testing.  There are plans to expand the Women’s Health Center soon.

Lab

LSFHC also offers discounted rates for lab work such as routine blood tests, bloodwork for prostate screening, pregnancy tests, and other common lab work.

Mental Health and Behavioral Health

Mental health is vital to overall well-being in a complex and fast-changing world.  A licensed professional counselor offers patients one hour counseling sessions for both mental and behavioral health. If patients are not able to make it to the office, sessions may be done virtually via Zoom.

Residency Program

LSFHC not only cares for families directly, but also helps to prepare other professionals to care for the families of the future. The organization provides a nationally recognized Family Medicine Residency Program which annually graduates up to 12 family medicine residents to serve in Montgomery County and elsewhere.

The Conroe Family Medicine Residency Program is one of the original eleven Teaching Health Centers in Graduate Medical Education. Resident physicians receive full-spectrum “hands-on” training in a congenial and collegial environment and learn to deliver cost-effective treatment while integrating the most advanced concepts in the medical field.

There are two optional unique training tracks in the residency program in addition to more traditional curriculum.

The “Medically Underserved” track recognizes the need for competent physicians who are able to offer comprehensive, compassionate and culturally sensitive care to the diverse and growing population of patients in underserved settings in the context of health and healthcare delivery in these communities.

“Obstetrical” track participants will gain advanced experience in low- and high-risk management of obstetrical patients and increased competence in operative obstetrical procedures.

Our History

LSFHC started in 1979 as a Family Medicine Residency Program located in Conroe.  In 2002, they joined in partnership with Conroe Medical Education Foundation and Conroe Hospital to be renamed LSFHC and open as a health center in Conroe. Once federally qualified in 2004, LSFHC continued to expand into Spring, Grangerland, and Willis with satellite offices. In November 2020, LSFHC opened the Huntsville location, which also has an in-house pharmacy. They offer family medicine, gynecology, and limited obstetric services.
