Bold red stripes. Bright white stars on a field of navy blue. The American flag is, to many of us, the ultimate symbol of freedom. Soldiers salute it, and we sing our national anthem while facing it, hands over our hearts, as we pledge allegiance to it.
We go all out in honor of the red, white, and blue on the Fourth of July, as we celebrate our country’s independence. Brightly colored tinsel decorates bicycles ridden by the smallest patriots in neighborhood parades, while elderly veterans smile and cheer them on, waving their own flags. Girls have their hair tied up with red, white, and blue ribbons, and boys don the stars and stripes on their t-shirts. Families gather for picnics and barbecues, and everyone sets their sights on the skies come evening, when the fireworks start popping.
Oh, how we love to celebrate our freedom.
But what about our freedom in Christ? Through a personal relationship with Jesus, we are given a gift of freedom that extends far beyond the borders of the United States. By God’s grace – not our own doing – we have freedom from sin and death. That is certainly worth celebrating! And how do we celebrate? Not with flags, banners and parades; but by serving each other in love.
